School Programs: Night Sky Experiences for K-12 Students

Join us for Boreal Stargazing on Tuesday, February 21 - Friday, February 24, 2023.
Bring your students out of their desk and into the largest International Dark Sky Region in the world - right here in Minnesota! By signing up for the Boreal Stargazing Week, your classroom will receive live FREE virtual programs from the National Park Service, Voyageurs Conservancy, and Friends of the Boundary Waters on the wonders of dark skies. Students will learn about these protected lands, the importance of dark skies, and how we can protect them.
Boreal Stargazing Week programs will be live-streamed directly to your classroom! Teachers will also receive the recorded sessions if they cannot attend the live programs.

Virtual Kickoff to Boreal Stargazing Week

Join Voyageurs Conservancy and Friends of the Boundary Waters as we kick off Boreal Stargazing week with an opportunity for students to learn more about each of these protected lands that make up the International Dark Sky zone in Northern Minnesota. Prepare for the week of presentations by exploring what you already know about dark skies, why they are important, and how we can protect them.
Dark Sky STEM Challenge at Voyageurs National Park

Join Expeditions in Education and the National Park Service LIVE on the ice in Voyageurs National Park! Students will learn about the spectacular resources at Minnesota’s national park and engineer their own solutions to preserve the night sky. Register with Expeditions in Education HERE. Teachers - please have your students watch the VOYA Crossing America Video and begin working on their STEM / ENGINEERING Challenge before this LIVE event.
Boreal Wonders in the Boundary Waters: An Ojibwe Perspective on the Night Sky

Protect the Night: Light Pollution with Voyageurs Conservancy and “Astro” Bob

Light Pollution (1:00 - 1:20pm): Light pollution is the invasion of night skies by artificial light. It is a growing issue with several far reaching adverse effects. Join a Voyageurs Conservancy member to learn more about the importance of night sky preservation and learn about ways that we can combat light pollution.
Winter Night Skies (1:20 - 1:40pm): Join Astro Bob on an exploration of winter night skies. In this program we will review easy-to-find objects such as planets, prominent bright stars, and other celestial objects so that you can explore the night sky on your own!
