The group will take a short walk down to the pond's edge to get a better look at the lodges and dams, while keeping a lookout for any other animal signs/sightings.

Abby Kostiuk, Voyageurs National Park Seasonal Wildlife Technician

My work at Voyageurs National Park helps build our understanding of the animal populations in the park by monitoring ecosystem health. This currently includes conducting various surveys for loons, bald eagles, secretive marshbirds, and semi-aquatic mammals like beavers and otters. While we hike and observe the beaver pond and its surroundings, I will share more about my work and experience with mammals here within the park such as beavers and wolves.

My very first wildlife position was volunteering as a field technician for the Voyageurs Wolf Project during the 2020 field season. I've been working as a seasonal Wildlife Biological Science Technician off and on since 2021. This will be my 3rd field season working as a biological technician here. I grew up in International Falls, Minnesota, just a few miles west of Voyageurs. In my free time I enjoy hiking, tracking wild animals, taking care of our chickens, and spending time with my fiancé, Ryan, and our miniature Aussie, Daisy.

This program is brought to you by Voyageurs Conservancy, the park's nonprofit partner. We are supported by passionate park stewards like you. If you'd like to support programs like this with a gift, please consider a donation when you register.
