December 30, 2009

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Citizens’ Board met again on December 15th, 2009 for a revote and voted to send the revised Regional Haze State Implementation Plan to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Voyageurs National Park Association and our partner organizations will continue to monitor this issue and follow up directly with EPA to work toward stronger air pollution controls.

For more information about our concerns with the revised plan, please visit our Regional Haze project page.

Laurel Beager of the International Falls Daily Journal also ran an article on the MPCA Citizens’ Board action, including comments from Voyageurs National Park Superintendent Mike Ward, who agrees that the plan was not ready to move to EPA.

Ward stated, “We want all of the energy and taconite plants in Minnesota to continue to operate. They are a huge economic base for the state of Minnesota. But we have a responsibility as federal land managers to comment on issues of air quality. That’s our responsibility. And the state, MPCA and regional haze plan will hopefully get to the point where it’s good for all parties involved.”
