Voyageurs National Park Winter Ice and Trail Operations BeginFrom the National Park Service, 12/18/09: Voyageurs National Park has begun checking lake ice conditions. For most areas on Park lakes, ice travel is not recommended due to inadequate ice thickness. However, conditions are rapidly improving with the colder temperatures. After a thorough evaluation of ice conditions on 12/18/09, park staff were able to determine that adequate ice for snowmobile use now exists on portions of Rainy Lake and Kabetogama Lake. As a result the Green Trail from Island View to Ash River is now staked and open for snowmobile travel. Caution is advised as some areas of the trail are wind blown exposing slick bare ice and overland portages are occasionally rough. Park staff is evaluating ice conditions on a daily basis between the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and Crane Lake. Land based ski trails are being prepared, but are not yet open. Regular weekly winter trail conditions reports will be available on the Park website at www.nps.gov/voya. |
