Lake Kabetogama to Host 2010 Governor’s Fishing OpenerLocated in Voyageurs National Park, Lake Kabetogama will be the site of the 62nd annual Governor’s Fishing Opener held the weekend of May 14 and 15, 2010. With over 25,000 acres of water and miles of idyllic, undeveloped shorelines, Kabetogama is a prime spot to spend a day on the lake to kick off Minnesota’s fishing season. “Kabetogama Lake is a choice location for the Opener with its great fishing and rich history of voyageurs and fur traders”, said John Edman, director of Explore Minnesota Tourism, the state agency that coordinates the event. “The Lake Kabetogama and Ash River Trail area provides a traditional family-owned resort community experience and showcases one of the gems of Minnesota, Voyageurs National Park.” Governor Tim Pawlenty announced that Lake Kabetogama would host the 2010 event at this year’s Governor’s Fishing Opener, May 8-9 on White Bear Lake. The last time the Opener was held on Lake Kabetogama was in 1982 with Governor Al Quie. According to the Timberjay, the Kabetogama community will need to provide lodging for more than 100 people, including elected officials and media representatives. Resorts in the area are ready to rise to the occasion. Heidi Schauer, co-owner of the Northern Lights Resort said, “It’s going to take a lot of work and cooperation, but the community is excited to be hosting the event.” She added, “Fishing has been really great the last couple of years and we got off to a good start this season. We’d love to have the governor catch a 25-inch walleye on opener here next year.” |
