Voyageurs National Park Temporarily Closes Casareto Beach on Crane Lake for Visitor Safety
From August 26, 2008 through September 24, 2008, the Casareto Beach and day use site on Crane Lake will be closed to visitor use during rehabilitation work on the historic Casareto cabin. The cabin was constructed in 1934 by local carpenters for the Casareto family of Worthington, Minnesota as a summer retreat. The Casareto property was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and is significant for its architecture and association with the history of tourism and recreation in northern Minnesota.
Work on the cabin will be completed by staff from the park and the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center located in Frederick, Maryland. The cabin started as a small, simple log building with a screened-in porch and was modified over time by the Casareto family to accommodate a growing family. The preservation crew will focus this year on replacing deteriorated logs and raising the building to install a new foundation. Next year park staff will complete the rehabilitation of the cabin and construct a dock.
The Casareto property is one of 14 areas in the park that have been designated as visitor destinations that will eventually be developed with day use facilities and interpretive media to provide visitors with opportunities to learn about the outstanding natural and cultural history of the park.
The day use site will be closed during the rehabilitation of the cabin to prevent visitor injuries during construction.
