High Water in the Borderlands

June 18, 2008
Posted in news and park news

Areas lying along the borderlands between Minnesota and Ontario have high water levels this spring, including Voyageurs National Park.

Though it is rather inconvenient for humans, these high waters are beneficial for the plants and animals in the region. Not only is wildlife well adapted to these fluctuations in water levels, rainwater can bring a much-needed flush of nutrients. Though it has its downfalls, too. Quickly flowing sediment can wash away fish spawn and young birds are more vulnerable during cold rains.
