DNR Seeks Comments: State Forest Trail Access

From now until Friday, July 11, 2008, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks comments on the draft plan that determines where motorized vehicles will be allowed to operate on state lands. More than 1,375 miles of trails, roads, and other routes were evaluated in northern St. Louis County. Some of these trails run up to or along the boundaries of Voyageurs National Park.

The draft proposal recommends that state lands located within Superior National Forest be classified as limited, except for those lands in Kabetogama National Forest, which will remian classified as managed. Limited means that motor vehicle use is permitted on forest roads and those trails specifically designated for certain types of motorized uses; for example, trails can be designated for ATV use or off-road motorcycle use. Managed means that motor vehicle use is permitted on all forest roads and trails unless posted (signed) closed.

In addition, the lands outside of the National Forest will be managed, excepting a few remote areas that will be either limited or closed. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness will remain closed to motor vehicle use.

Comments should be directed to Brian McCann, DNR Trails & Waterways, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4052; by e-mail at brian.mccann@dnr.state.mn.us or by calling (651) 259-5627 or toll free 1-888-MINNDNR (646-6367). Comments on the draft proposal will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11.
